A little while ago, I came across an interesting comment here about the movie '3 idiots' which offers to the reader an opposite perspective. The author is a Senior Editor of CNN IBN. This is my answer to what she has to say.
Dear Sagarika,
For ease of understanding I am putting down my tickling and maybe unintentionally provoking arguments into points:
1. Either you were from the IITs or your boyfriend was!
2. I find it strange that even now you do not understand that the higher education system in India today is absolutely hollow. Haven't Masters' thesis and doctoral research work become another name for plagiarism and open blatant copying of ideas? How many students do all the projects originally and even though the faculties know that such instances do occur what steps have been taken to dissuade students from doing so?
3. Even more stranger is that you yourself are the chief editor of a channel that has on numerous occasions pointed out how children both big and small have died due to the physical and mental atrocities meted out to them by their teachers. Do you think that "Lt. Mr. Joy Lobo" is a purely fictitious character? I would believe otherwise based on personal experiences. The truth is that barring a few teachers, most others don't teach, they order and dictate. Learning in India today takes place not BECAUSE but IN SPITE of such teachers!
4. What a list of luminaries from the institutes of excellence you have presented Ms. Ghosh. Kudos to you! But pray tell me why there is no mention of a scientist who has invented something or a management guru who has brought to light a new concept. Pray explain that if Narayana Murthy, Nandan Mohan Nilekani etc. not be called "Lamborghini-chasing", then what should they be called? After all they are businessmen who wanted to and are successful. Ms. Ghosh, if you did not get the point we are talking about academic excellence here, NOT mere success. To make it simpler for you, it is the same difference between "Rancho" and "Chatur" in the movie. The world today needs people like Rancho who pursue excellence, not Chaturs who run after success. Your list is full of successful people, but we are not talking about them at all!!!
5. What is there to worship about rote learning? I thought that technique is meant for only children below the age of 5. After that you are supposed to start thinking, right? I think you found it so easy that you are still obsessed with it. But please don't hero-worship it. That can be quite dangerous to so many people around us.
6. I never realized that 3 idiots degraded hard work or for that matter sadhna. I thought it clearly showed the influence of hard work (of course a bit of luck too) on the life of Rancho and how his life was a struggle. To help put up with the challenges that life threw up at him our Rancho devised the mantra ALL IZZ WELL. And thanks for the certification that Rancho was naturally gifted. Pray, can you explain how, since he was the child of a humble gardener? I think he developed it through years of hard work where he stayed back in class after school and worked out problems on the class blackboard since he had no copies to practice on at home.
7. I understand your obsession with Nehruvian principles, but the facts are quite at odds with your premises Ms. Ghosh. India is slowly discovering that almost all Nehruvian policies were whimsical and is phasing them out. Nehru drove us to non-alignment and he himself discovered that it was impractical. Hence we had to run to Moscow for help and protection under his leadership. His concept of mixed economy is now being slowly replaced by socialistic government in a capitalistic market. We removed the closed economy in 1990s and thank God (& P. V. Narasimha Rao- Manmohan Singh duo) for that! He set up dams - today they cause the worst ecological problems India faces (Narmada Bachao Andolan people will give you more data). The steel industries that he predicted would drive India's future are today redundant and sick almost on the verge of becoming non- existent. The only policy still alive, for all practical purposes is Children's Day. ;-)
8. Some things are too holy to be dragged down to the level of silly debates, so let Mother Saraswati stay within the comfortable premises of her lotus and veena.
9. I am sure that in the coming years your channel will telecast a documentary on the success of Kapil Sibalji's revolutionary move in trying to remove board exams that have been often . Then we'll have the last laugh. ;-)
10. You have spoken about the need for the next generation to understand the importance of good spelling and grammar to prevent us from intellectual nothingness! I don't think you understand it as well, else why would you not spare a bit of time to run a spell-check on your article?
The film is meant for people (like you, Ms. Ghose) who fall into the category of Chatur in the movie and deem that success is the be all and end all of all things. ITS NOT.

Sreejith, You seem to have taken this personally man. Well that apart, I beg to differ on some issues. "Lamborghini chasing" isn't a bad thing and secondly, if NRN was a 'Lambo' chaser, we would not have Infy... Secondly, you might need to revisit your views on dams. Now that I am in Gujarat, I can see the good that it has done for the people. No doubt, Nehru was a dreamer, but probably this was the best solution then?
But good work. Keep it up. And try to continue blogging even after you take up a job. Its almost impossible for me now.

Dear Anush,
Thanks primarily for your comments.
Though I have written the post in an aggressive tone, it has not been taken personally.
Lamborghini chasing is not bad. True. However, it represents chasing success not excellence. The point of debate is that if you chase excellence you get success automatically however the vice-versa is not true. And in that context, though Mr. Murthy deserves respect and admiration, it is because he is successful in what he is doing (like numerous others like Vijay Mallya or Bill Gates). Yet it is not excellence. Mr.Murthy has not won a Nobel or Booker or for that matter is not considered an authority to speak on technical aspects of latest software development. He knows commercialization which is by no means unimportant, yet it falls short of pursuing excellence - no matter how much money he makes. And as far as your vision of good that dams have done, I can't comment on whether you are right or wrong. Yet the fact remains that in the developed world is decommissioning its dams due to the adverse effects it has.
